I have worked with individuals diagnosed with autism for many years. The children I have worked with broadened my conception of reality and opened me to the extraordinary. It is as if we join at a subconscious level and form a single consciousness, dancing in rhythm in an easy flow of ideas. Much of this has been demonstrated through facilitated writing, drawing, typing, and word selection. I stress that information I receive can be distorted by my limited knowledge base and my bias.
I have much in common with the many dedicated facilitators out there; however, my experience taught me that influence occurs. I do not regard individuals who hit the keys by themselves, but need a “partner” or “facilitator” in their proximity, as “independent”. Influence may still be there. If you know of anyone who has been able to make a final leap to independence, with out a partner and still keep the same quality of communicative writing, please let me know. I believe it is possible! We should keep trying! But in order to move forward, the entire process along with all the questionable variables need to openly discussed and researched.
Proponents of FC and "partner dependent typing" appear unable or unwilling to comprehend and publicly state the magnitude of the gifts these individuals have to share.
My personal experiences suggest that it is a "partnership" that can be influenced by the dominant person through the use of mental prompts, sub–vocalizations, and possible extremely subtle cuing. I can clearly demonstrate that I can purposefully affect the communications of the many people I have worked with. Therefore, even when I am trying to keep my ego at bay, it is and always has been necessary that I openly share that possibility of unintentional influence thru non-sensory channels. These kids are very sensitive and susceptible.
I refuse to state that information that could be inadvertently tainted by my own subconscious is coming totally from or though the person typing. That would be a “dangerous” distortion of truth. I “share” authorship.
I believe these magnificent gifted souls continue to be under utilized by the restrictions we put on them by our own limited thinking. I would love to be hooked up to brain imaging equipment during the exchange with a partner to see if anything can be learned.
