Doris Stokes ( 1920-1987 ) Born Doris sutton in Grantham Lincolnshire. She was a natural Medium and see Spirit as a child. Doris joined the Spiritualist Church in 1944, at the time Spiritualism was not a recognised religeon, this did not happen until 1951 when the witchcraft act of 1824 was repelled, the wording " ...using any subtle craft, means or device by Palmistry or otherwise," this condemed Mediums whether genuine or not to the threat of prosecution. Doris was convicted for conspiring to pretend that she was in touch with spirits and given a nine month prison sentence. She was later recognised by the Spiritualists National Union ( SNU ) as a bonafida practising Medium in 1949. In 1962 doris became dispondant and lost confidence and returned to nursing where she retrained and became a Psychiatric Nurse. She retired five years later after being attacked by a patient. Doris returned to Psychic work in 1975, she became a resident Medium at The Spiritualist Association Of Great Britain ( SAGB ) in Londons Belgrave Square. In 1978 Doris gained public attention in australia after appearing on the Don Lane Show on Television. As a consequence to this Doris filled to capacity not once but three times the Sydney Opera House. She was also the first Medium to appear at Londons prestigous London Palladium, tickets sold out in two hours! Doris was an inovator of her time, she was probably the first Medium to make theartre Demonstrations of Mediumship popular as we know they are today. In 1980 Doris Autobiography " Voices In My Ear " ghost written by Linda Dearsley, it was well recieved by the public. We got to know about Doris Spirit Guide Ramanov| and the wisdom he imparted through her Mediumship, it was always uplifting to the reader. The Church Of England were less than charitable and condemned Doris as evil. Doris replied to them that her work was done for God in accordance with the Bible instruction " Test The Spirits To See If They Are Good " Doris was later accused of deception and that her husband John would find out information from people who come to see Doris, or that Doris put plants in the audience. None of this was ever proved to be true. Doris along with Linda Dearsley published seven books they all proved to be popular with the public. Doris suffered bad health throughout her life, he had thirteen cancer operations including a Masectomy, she retained her sense of humour and said that the Spirit World were taken her over a bit at a time. In April 1987 a Brain Tumour was diagnosed. A operation followed, Doris never regained conciousness and passed to Spirit aged only 67. It is here I would like to pay tribute to Doris and her Spirit Guide Ramanov for their untiring work in proving life eternal, and the reality of a Spirit World and of Spirit communication. She is now reunited in Spirit with her beloved and devoted husband John, her son John Michael and her adopted son Terry, she loved them all with all of her heart and soul. Doris eighth book " Host Of Voices " with Linda Dearsley was published posthumously and proved as popular as her previous books. Her dedication and inspiration live on.
