Astrology is linked in the popular mind with healing crystals, but confusion has long reigned, at least in the West, over the hodgepodge of alleged gem correspondences which vary wildly from astrologer to astrologer. Jyotish (Vedic/Indian astrology) gemstone therapy alternatively, follows an ancient and unvarying system:
Sun – Ruby
Moon – Pearl
Mars - Coral
Mercury – Emerald
Jupiter – Yellow Sapphire
Venus - Diamond
Saturn – Blue Sapphire
Rahu (North Node) – Hessonite
Ketu (South Node) – Cat’s Eye Crysoberyl
Notice that this system doesn’t go by zodiacal sign. It is simply no good, even with the best of intentions, to buy a moonstone for your Cancerian friend’s birthday, or to say “I’m a Sagittarius, so I should wear amethyst”. Your gemstone has nothing to do with your Sunsign. Prescribing a Jyotish gemstone is a subtle process that can only be done with reference to the individual’s full natal chart, based on time, date and place of birth. Ask your Vedic astrologer.
A good-quality gem of at least 2-3 carats should be worn touching the skin, either on a gold or silver pendant or ring – there are guidelines for the correct finger too. Note that the Vedic system deals in gemstones rather than crystals, which are expensive items. Fortunately, there are semi-precious alternatives for each planet: Garnet, Moonstone, Peridot, Zircon, Carnelian, Topaz, Amethyst, though it may be necessary to wear two or three different substitute stones – correctly prescribed - to make up full strength.
The wrong gemstone will be not only ineffective, but potentially harmful – you really do not wish to strengthen a negative influence in your chart. There are generally no more than two or three gemstones anyone can wear safely, and here the astrologer goes by Hippocrates’s axiom: ‘First, do no harm’. Witness Kim Kardashian’s recent hijacking in her Paris hotel room, where her famous $4m diamond ring was stolen: a diamond is the last gemstone Kim, with Scorpio rising, should wear. A pearl or ruby on the other hand would be excellent to promote her health and success.
Wear your gemstone for the first time on its ruling day of the week: Sunday for ruby, Monday for pearl, Tuesday for coral and cat’s eye, Wednesday for emerald, Thursday for yellow sapphire, Friday for diamond, and Saturday for blue sapphire and hessonite. Make an affirmation when you put the gemstone on, and ask for the protection and best qualities of its planet. A good quality gemstone will promote the positive qualities of the areas its planet rules in your chart, though it should not be seen as a universal panacea. A Jyotish gemstone is the beginning, not the end, of working with your chart.
